Eating Disorders
People who come for eating disorder treatment want to know, first of all, if it’s really possible to get better, and secondly, how to get better. I have specialized in eating disorders for many years, and I can promise you that recovery is possible. As for the “how,” every person is unique. What works for one client may not work for another, so every treatment plan has to be tailored to the individual.

Therapy for an eating disorder can best be described as multimodal. First the symptoms of the eating disorder need to be stabilized so that the underlying issues can be addressed. These may include past trauma, depression, anxiety, poor self esteem and body image, or a combination of these. A variety of techniques and treatment approaches may be employed:

- Insight-oriented individual therapy
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy
- Dialectical-behavioral therapy
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
- Biofeedback and progressive relaxation
- Group psychotherapy
- Medical management
- Medication management
- Nutritional counseling
As the client, your input is extremely important. If you have had previous therapy that has not improved the disorder, we will need to work together to discover what was missing and what needs to be included to enable the healing. Many people with eating disorders spend years being treated by inexperienced professionals who don’t fully understand the condition. As a result, the illness just becomes more entrenched. The key is to break the cycle of disordered eating and tackle the underlying issues that lead to the destructive thinking and behavior.
